Naomi Watts

Naomi Ellen Watts (born 28 September 1968) is a British-born Australian raised actress. Watts began her career in Australian television, where she appeared in commercials and series, including the soap opera Home and Away, Brides of Christ and the family sitcom Hey Dad..!.

She is known for her roles in films such as Mulholland Drive (2001), The Ring (2002) and 21 Grams (2003), for which she received worldwide attention and an Academy Award nomination. She starred in the successful film King Kong (2005), where she acted along with Jack Black and Adrien Brody. Watts appeared in Eastern Promises (2007), and The International (2009). Watts stars in Fair Game, with her 21 Grams costar Sean Penn and Mother and Child (2010).



Early life

Watts was born in Shoreham, Kent, England, the daughter of Myfanwy Edwards (née Roberts), a Welsh antiques dealer and costume and set designer, and Peter Watts, a road manager and sound engineer who worked with Pink Floyd.

Watts has one brother, Ben, a year older and now a photographer residing in the United States. Watts's parents separated when she was four years old. Her father died during her childhood. Following her father's death, her mother moved the family to Llanfawr Farm, on Anglesey in North Wales, where they lived with Watts's maternal grandparents, Nikki and Hugh Roberts. During this time she attended a Welsh language school, Ysgol Gyfun, Llangefni where she carried out her studies for several years. Watts described her mother (also an actress) as a hippie "with passive-aggressive tendencies" and no money, who used to threaten to send her and her brother to foster care in order to get her parents to provide for them.

Although her mother occasionally moved the family around Wales and England, usually to follow boyfriends, she always ended up returning to Llangefni, living there until Naomi was 14. Watts says that she wanted to become an actress since watching the 1980 film Fame.[citation needed] In 1982, the family moved to Sydney, Australia. Her grandmother was Australian, which made it easier to obtain the documentation necessary, since Watts and her family were entitled to Australian citizenship.

Of her nationality, she has said:

After moving to Sydney, she attended Mosman High School. She attended several schools, including North Sydney Girls' High School, where her classmates included Nicole Kidman, with whom she is still close. In 1986 she took a break from acting and went to Japan to work as a model, but the experience, which lasted for about four months, was fruitless as Watts did not have the physical requirements for a professional runway model and could only hope to be working in promotions, which did not excite her. Watts describes it as one of the worst periods of her life. Upon returning to Australia, she went to work for a local department store and from there she went to work as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. A casual invitation to participate in a drama workshop rekindled her passion for acting, and prompted her to quit her job and dedicate herself to succeeding as an actress.[citation needed]

Early work (1986–2000)

Watts's career began in Australian television, where she appeared in commercials and series, including the soap opera Home and Away, the award winning mini-series Brides of Christ and the family sitcom Hey Dad..! She was featured in a supporting role in the acclaimed 1991 Australian indie film Flirting, starring future Hollywood up-and-comers Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton. As Watts made the transition from Australia to the United States, she landed a supporting role in the cult 1995 film Tank Girl, playing the part of "Jet Girl".

Finding quality roles in the Hollywood system at first proved difficult. She appeared in the short-lived series, Sleepwalkers and numerous B-list productions such as films like Children of the Corn IV. Much of her early career is filled with near misses in casting as she was up for significant roles in films such as The Parent Trap, Meet the Parents and Man on the Moon, roles would eventually go to other actresses. Breakthrough (2001–2004)

In 2001, she starred in The Shaft directed by Dick Maas, which garnered poor reviews. Watts starred in David Lynch's highly acclaimed Mulholland Drive. The film premiered at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, winning her the National Society of Film Critics Award as Best Actress and the National Board of Review award as Breakthrough Performance of the Year. The surrealist film attracted controversy with its strong lesbian theme.Having worked with director/screenwriter Scott Coffey on Mulholland Drive, they teamed up to co-produce her next film, the semi-autobiographical Ellie Parker, which grew out of the friendship forged between Watts and Coffey.

She produced and starred in the well-received independent film We Don't Live Here Anymore. She reunited with Sean Penn and Don Cheadle in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, teamed up with Jude Law and Dustin Hoffman in David O. Russell's ensemble comedy. Career success (2005–present)

She then starred in the much-anticipated remake of King Kong (2005) as Ann Darrow. The role, immortalized by Fay Wray in the original film, proved to be Watts's most commercially successful film yet. Helmed by The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, the film won high praise and grossed $550 million worldwide.

Her father's manic laugh can be heard in Pink Floyd's "Speak to Me" and "Brain Damage" and her mother's comments can be heard in "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Money" from The Dark Side of the Moon. Watts is pictured in her mother's arms with her father, brother, the band, and other crew members, in the hardback/softcover edition of drummer Nick Mason's autobiography of the band Inside Out.

Watts dated Stephen Hopkins in the 1990s and actor Heath Ledger[28] from August 2002 to May 2004. Since the spring of 2005, Watts's partner has been the actor Liev Schreiber. Bollywood films and its superstars are rocking the lucrative overseas market, with Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film My Name Is Khan (MNIK) being described as a ‘global phenomenon’ by trade analysts. Hindi films today recover almost 40 percent of its total revenue from overseas markets.

Contrastingly, in Kollywood, films with big heroes have a measly 7 to 10 percent of its total gross from overseas markets. Why is it that the overseas market of Tamil films is not in the league of Hindi films, despite being the second largest revenue earner among Indian films in foreign countries? Reasons Jayavel Murugan, one of the biggest distributors for Tamil films in the US, “First and foremost, there is only a market for Tamil superstars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Suriya, Vikram and Ajith — in that order. There is no real market for other heroes’ films as a lot depends on reviews on the Internet. Recently, Tamizh Padam (a spoof on Kollywood) — which got rave reviews on the Internet — has become a sleeper hit.”

Last year, 60 to 65 of the total 132 films were released in overseas markets. However, considering the fact that the Tamil diaspora has settled in more than 50 countries globally, the revenue from Tamil films is insignificant. The highest collecting Tamil films in the overseas market are — Sivaji (said to have grossed around Rs 12 crore), Dasavatharam (rumoured to have grossed around Rs 10 crore) and Pokkiri (around Rs 5 crore).

The reason for the lacklustre response to Tamil films at the BO overseas is mainly due to rampant piracy. According to an estimate made by an Anti Movie Piracy Company (AMPC), about 1,200 illegal websites upload Tamil films the moment they are released. These websites operate out of overseas countries and cater to the local Tamil audiences. Pirated DVDs of Tamil films get released within a day of the film’s release and are sold across the 50 countries where there is revenue potential.

Recently, Bollywood biggies signed up with multiple AMPCs to delete illegal Internet video streams of movies like 3 Idiots, Paa and the recent MNIK. So, why cannot Tamil producers employ similar tactics to prevent illegal files of their films on the Internet? Says a leading Tamil producer, “The trouble is that while Hindi films are literally releasing worldwide in 400 to 500 screens, Tamil films release in hardly a dozen countries (in 50 to 70 screens). Also, Hindi films are getting newer markets (MNIK released in 8 screens in Egypt) where there are hardly any Indians. But, Tamil films have not gone beyond traditional markets.”

Concludes Jayavel Murugan, “Top Bollywood heroes go to every nook and corner of the planet to promote their films. But, Kollywood superstars refuse to do overseas promotions. Kollywood should shed its conservative approach and market films aggresively if it wants to survive.”

It has almost been confirmed that Ilayathalapathy Vijay will play Rancho, the character made memorable by Aamir Khan in the Rajkumar Hirani-directed 3 Idiots.

The Bollywood mega blockbuster will be remade in Tamil by a popular production house which has the remake rights in all south Indian languages. The company had earlier bought Sanjay Dutt’s Munnabhai MBBS from its Hindi producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and remade it in Tamil as Vasool Raja MBBS with Kamal Haasan which turned out to be a hit.

Vijay reportedly loved 3 Idiots and expressed a desire to do the Tamil remake. So, the producers approached him and he is said to have willingly agreed to do it without any change in the story. A source close to Vijay said that the actor felt that there was more heroism and grit in Rancho’s character than in the larger-than-life superheroes who dominate commercial cinema. “Also, he found the underlying message in the film powerful. The actor is confident that the film will work with the masses and classes alike,” he said.

The source added that the actor feels the original has tremendous youth appeal and a feel-good factor which will work in a big way with the audiences. “It will work big time in Tamil Nadu, which has the maximum number of engineering colleges in the private sector in India. Says a leading Tamil film director, “Vijay understands commercial cinema better than most other actors. He realises that the days of the bad-guy-bashing-heroes are numbered. He wants to move on and do something more sensible and different. The concept of 3 Idiots — which openly challenges our education system that encourages learning by rote — will work with the common man for whom education is of prime importance.”

The producers of the film are now on the lookout for a director who can do a balancing act between commercial and sensible cinema. Vijay himself is reported to have told the producers that he does not want to tinker with the storyline or introduce mass elements, and wants a director who will be faithful to the original. Noted director Vishnuvardhan was approached to do the remake, but declined it citing other commitments in Telugu. Says Vishnuvardhan, “I think it is going to be a kickass film. Vijay is fantastic in comedy roles. I wish I could do it, but unfortunately I’m busy with two Telugu projects with Allu Arjun and Ram.”

Noted cameraman Ratnavelu has been approached to handle the camera for the film, which is likely to have music by Vijay Antony (the original Shantanu Moitra’s music with chartbusters like Aal Izz Well and Zoobie Doobie come with the remake rights). Sources state that among those contacted for doing the heroine’s role are Shruti Haasan and Asin. However, when contacted, Shruti refuted the claim and went on to say, “I haven’t been approached for this project. Currently, my commitments and dates lie with Murugadoss’s film. I’m also busy setting up house in Mumbai and have no time to breathe.”

Meanwhile, the grapevine is abuzz that Sathyaraj has agreed to play the role of Viru Sahastrabudhhe (or Virus, as he was called) — the grumpy principal in the film. Jiiva has given the nod to play the role of Raju, played by Sharman Joshi. Farhan’s role, played brilliantly by Madhavan in the original, is likely to be played by an upcoming star, after Simbu politely refused it.

It sure looks like aal izz well for Vijay as the film will start rolling by July after he completes the first schedule of Bodyguard’s remake with Siddique.

நடிகர் கவுண்டமணிக்கு திடீ‌ரென ஹார்ட் அட்டாக் ஏற்பட்டதாகவும், அப்பல்லோ மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட அவரது நிலைமை கவலைக்கிடமாக உள்ளதாகவும் பரபரப்பு ஏற்பட்டது.

இந்த செய்தி வந்ததும் சினிமா பிரலபலங்கள், ரசிகர்கள் மருத்துவமனையில் குவிந்தனர். அவர்களிடம் கவுண்டமணியின் மனைவி, ‘’அவருக்கு நெஞ்சு வலி வந்ததாகக் கூறப்படுவதில் உண்மையில்லை. கழுத்து எலும்பு தேய்மானம் காரணமாக அவதிப்பட்டு வந்தார். இப்போது சிகிச்சைக்குப் பிறகு நலமுடன் உள்ளார். ஒன்றும் பிரச்சனையில்லை’’என்று தெரிவித்தார்.

இந்நிலையில் அவர் இன்று திடீர் மாரடைப்பால் இறந்துவிட்டார் என்று செய்தி வந்தது.

இது குத்தமாய்யா... நெஞ்சு வலி, சீரியஸ்னு கதைய முடிக்க பாக்குறாங்களே... ’’என்று நொந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்.


கவுண்டமணி மருத்துவமனையிலிருந்து இன்னும் வீடு திரும்பவில்லை. ஆனால், ஒவ்வொரு வியாழனன்றும் ஈசிஆர் சாலையில் உள்ள சாய்பாபா கோவிலுக்கு செல்கிற வழக்கம் உள்ளவர் அவர்.

இந்த வியாழக்கிழமையும் கோயிலுக்கு போக வேண்டும் என்பதால், ’’கோயிலிக்கு போயிட்டு வந்துடறேனே..’’என்று மருத்துவர்களிடம் கேட்டிருக்கிறாராம்.

’’திருமணங்கள் தேவை இல்லை என்று கமல் காலம் கடந்து சொல்லி இருக்கிறார். என்னை பொறுத்தவரை திருமணங்களை நான் எதிர்க்கவில்லை.

எனக்கு திருமணம் நடந்ததால் என்மகன் பூபதி என்ற முத்து கிடைத்தான். அவனுக்கு மூன்று குழந்தைகள் முத்துக்களாய் பிறந்துள்ளன. ஒரு பெண் டாக்டருக்கு படிக்கிறாள். இன்னொரு பெண் கல்லூரியில் படிக்கிறாள்.

கமல் திருமணம் செய்ததால்தான் ஸ்ருதி என்ற முத்து கிடைத்து இருக்கிறார். எல்லோரும் என்னை ஆச்சி என்று அழைக்கின்றனர். சமீபத்தில் ஒரு விழாவில் வீர மறத்தி மனோரமா வாழ்க என்று கோஷமிட்டனர். அது மகிழ்ச்சியளித்தது.

ஆண், பெண் இருபாலரும் திருமணத்துக்கு முன்பே ஆண்மைக்குறைவு, எய்ட்ஸ் போன்றவற்றுக்கான மருத்துவ பரிசோதனை செய்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். இதை சட்டமாக்கும்படி அரசிடம் வற்புறுத்துவேன்.
