Patriots trade down to take CB Devin McCourty

Patriots trade down to take CB Devin McCourty :

FOXBORO - Perhaps the Patriots  were sick of Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis tormenting them during 2009. Last night, they may have drafted their own version.
With the 27th selection of the NFL draft, coach Bill Belichick selected Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty, a physical player who could go a long way in easing their woes against pass-happy teams last season.
After trading down twice from their original selection at No. 22 while picking up a third-round pick, Belichick settled on McCourty, a player who didn’t expect to be selected that quickly. He is a special teams star, as well.
The 5-foot-11, 193-pounder is roughly the same size as Revis. Both toiled away from publicity in the Big East, with Revis at Pittsburgh and McCourty at Rutgers.
“When you turn on the TV in this area, Revis is always on,” McCourty said last night. “He was one of the top cornerbacks in our conference, and when you have a guy that good in your conference, you just watch him on film. And obviously, he’s on a lot now and especially in the playoffs. I looked at him for what I can add to my game.”
Added Belichick: “That’s a positive trait, a player who works on his game.”
McCourty made 80 tackles - 7 for a loss - with just one interception in 2009. He also blocked seven kicks on special teams.
“Coach (Greg) Schiano always said you can be even on offense and defense, but special teams can be the tiebreaker,” McCourty said. “I take that very seriously.”
As for Belichick, he said McCourty was “the player with the best value for us.” He would’ve taken McCourty at 22 if he’d stayed there.
“I think the end of the first round worked out about as well as we could’ve hoped,” Belichick said. “He’s a very tough, good four-down football player. It’s hard for me to picture a player who can do more that.”
In many ways, the pick was surprising. McCourty said he was in the bathroom when the phone rang, leading his twin brother Jason (a Tennessee Titan) to bang on the door and say, “Answer the phone!”
The Pats have cornerback Leigh Bodden, Darius Butler and Shawn Springs on the roster. And defensive end Jared Odrick and outside linebacker Sergio Kindle were available. Instead, Belichick sought pass-coverage help, especially with the rest of the AFC East loading up on offensive weapons.
Butler appeared excited, saying in a tweet, “That’s a good pick! Can’t have enough CBs, especially Big East ones.” Instantly, ESPN analyst Jon Gruden lauded the selection: “McCourty will give them a lot of versatility.”
Trading out of the 22nd pick (Denver) and then the 24th pick (Dallas), the Pats landed at 27 with so many defensive targets still available. They also acquired the 90th overall pick, a third-rounder they had lost in the Derrick Burgess trade.
Not sure if he was going to be picked last night, McCourty erred on the side of caution.
“It was really up in the air,” McCourty said. “I didn’t want to have my hopes too high, but it was an incredible feeling. My mom and I cried a little bit. We’re just so happy now.”
McCourty hadn’t gotten a strong feeling if the Pats would select him. But he did have a one-on-one meeting with Belichick when the coach spoke at a clinic at Rutgers. The two went over some film, and Belichick handed out some pointers.

When they spoke last night, Belichick said, “Are you ready to become a Patriot?” McCourty responded, “Coach, I’m ready.”

Stallone taps he-men pals Willis and Ah-nuld for 'The Expendables'

If you’re a certain kind of red-meat action movie fan — you know you who are — then you’re already counting down the days to Sylvester Stallone’s orgy of macho mayhem, The Expendables, on August 13th. Sure, we understand that the former Italian Stallion’s output these days has been decidedly hit or miss. But The Expendables is destined to be a classic. Why?  Because it features the once-in-a-lifetime summit of the Big Three action czars of the ’80s: Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“It took probably eight months to pull it off because of everyone’s schedules,” says Stallone, who also directed and co-wrote the $55 million throwback to man-on-a-mission classics like The Dirty Dozen. “With Arnold especially, we’d plan a date and then there’d be a fire or a budget crisis and he’d have to go back to Sacramento.”

Stallone says the big scene between the three icons serves as little more than a cameo for his A-list pals. But, he adds, “it really sets the hook for the movie.” Willis plays a shady mogul who hires Stallone’s band of mercenaries — which includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, mixed-martial-arts champ Randy Couture, and former NFL player Terry Crews — to overthrow a Latin American dictator. In a twist that smacks of Reagan-era box-office showdowns, Schwarzenegger plays Sly’s longtime rival, a fellow soldier of fortune. “Arnold and I talked about how it takes a while to start up the engines these days,” laughs the 63-year-old Stallone.

“It’s the three of us going nose-to-nose,” Stallone continues. “Bruce and Arnold just got it. It’s so funny because you get there and it’s like, We’ve all seen each other socially, but this is different. It’s like meeting a fellow athlete in the ring. Oh, okay, everyone knows how to work the camera and what angles work for them. It was just fantastic. They’re such pros. Because it’s probably never going to happen again.”

For Stallone’s younger costar, Statham, who grew up weaned on the films of these three stars, the prospect of watching these three in the same scene is like catnip. “I’ve actually seen the scene with the three of them and it’s the best scene in the film,” he says. “I was almost in tears with how funny it is. It’s worth every dollar.”

Stallone says also approached his onetime marquee mates Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme to join the cast, too. But it wasn’t to be. “Seagal had complications because he was busy with his TV show. But Van Damme just had complications about the…a lot of this has been blown out of proportion. Supposedly, he said ‘What is the character’s motivation?’ And I supposedly said, ‘Well, we’re making lots of money!’ Which I never said. I’ve never said that in my entire life! I said, ‘It’s about you and Jet Li. He defeats you.’ And he says, ‘That’s impossible!’ And I go, ‘It’s a movie.’ And he goes, ‘But it could never happen!’ And he said, ‘Why don’t you think of doing some other kind of movie? Maybe something that has to do with inner-city politics? And I go, ‘Well, that’s a little removed from where I’m at. So you hang in there and keep punching.’ A lot has been made out of it. He’s going in a whole different direction with his career and he just didn’t want to go there. I wish he had. There’s always a sequel, so who knows?”

Jennifer Love Hewitt has a crush on Robert Pattinson

Newly-single actress Jennifer Love Hewitt is eyeing to romance Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson.

The 'Heartbreakers' star recently ended a year-long relationship with comedy actor Jamie Kennedy, and insists she's ready to find love again, AceShowbiz reported online.

"His features are so striking. I love that he has such a soft voice," Hewitt said.

However, to win over the British actor would be a tough game for Hewitt as he has constantly been linked to his 'Twilight' co-star Kristen Stewart.

This is not the first time the 31-year-old actress has expressed her love for Pattinson.

"There is not a girl in the world who's not Team Edward! Have you met girls who are not Team Edward? Well, they are not girls! They're aliens from another planet who should not be allowed to exist,"Hewitt had said in an earlier interview.

Gerard Is Not In 'Saat Khoon Maaf', Says Priyanka :

Scottish actor Gerard Butler is not playing one of Priyanka Chopra's seven husbands in Vishal Bharadwaj's upcoming flick "Saat Khoon Maaf".

The National Award winning actress clarified this through her Twitter page.

The actress posted, "Guys just to clarify things... Gerard Butler is not in 'Saat Khoon Maaf'. I don't know where these fictional stories come out as news."

Recently, a Mumbai newspaper had published that Miss Chopra had used her personal relationship with Gerard to sign him in for "Saat Khoon Maaf".

And she is quite miffed.

While Bollywood isn't exactly known for sex in its films, but it has been an important part of the storyline of many a Bollywood flick and this isn't just in the B-grade stuff. There have been a number of mainstream Bollywood films in which sex played a privotal role in the narrative as our list shows.

Actress Udita Goswami is all set to woo her co-actor Anuuj Saxena in Jag Mohan Mundhra's Chase.

Here are more than a handful of Bollywood films that had a sex flavour about them.

Arya Donning a Villian Role in Tollywood

Arya, after his performance in Naan Kadavul, has bagged several projects and has established himself quite well in Kollywood. The actor has now signed up an interesting offer in Tollywood. Reportedly, Arya will be playing a villain in a Telugu film that will directed by Gunasekar. Sources close to him state that Arya took up the villain role because it has equal footage to that of the hero’s character. Incidentally, Telugu star Allu Arjun plays the lead role. The director said that shooting of this film will commence today and will be
completed in a couple of months. Arya definitely seems to be on a experimental spree.

Ashwariya Rai’s commitment to Robot came in for some heavy discussion yesterday. Nearly all sections of the media had recently carried reports of Ash being offered the female lead role in Robot for an astounding sum, making her the top paid actress in the entire country. But only yesterday reports were floating around of Ash pulling out of the

Aishwarya Rai
movie, citing her pregnancy as a reason. Robot, a 24 month project, was too long a time for her to be away from home, seemed to be the implication.

Dispelling these reports strongly, Ash today said that she is committed to Robot; that she admires Shankar for always being a step ahead of any other filmmaker when it came to making cutting edge techno savvy movies. Excited about working with Rajinikanth, she had nothing but praise for him. Rajini is an institution personified, she added, and she would never miss out on an opportunity to work with him.

And here’s further proof of Ash’s commitment to the film industry: The actress, along with her husband Abhishek Bachchan, will star in one more Mani Ratnam film. And no! This is not a Tamil film but Hindi.

Wikileaks

Wikileaks and the Internalized National-Security-Virtual-State :

For many people, at least those living in the United States and other highly industrial and technologically advanced societies, the social and cultural environments of the Electronic Age have come to mean more than real flesh-and blood. In other words, the virtual world of mass media and its larger-than-life entertaining personalities are the images people carry around in their heads. Communications experts have also discovered that for most people these celebrities, politicians and news pundits are socially real and extremely influential. In fact, people act like them, dress like them, speak like them, behave like them, and talk to them-at least in their minds. (This explains the popularity of some talk-show hosts and the surges that mimic their words and views.)
I was reminded of this when Wikileaks released a 2007 video showing a U.S. gunship massacring unarmed civilians in Iraq. (They plan to release another video of U.S. aircraft bombing a Afghan village killing 140 civilians.) It was reminiscent too of when some of us, years ago, challenged U.S. hegemony and wars in Latin America. I once had the chance to travel with Ed Haase throughout Guatemala. He was a radio-journalist from Kansas City and after making frequent trips to Central America, he reported about the consequences U.S. militarization and the reoccurring atrocities. On one occasion, while returning from Nicaragua, he was detained by U.S. Customs officials. FBI agents interrogated him and seized his notes, diary, address book, and other Central American documents.
Not only did U.S. officials harass and question hundreds of other U.S. citizens returning from Nicaragua, but from other nations. I can still recall coming back to the U.S. from Guatemala and Custom officials photocopying my notes. Others were taken to private rooms and interrogated. Just as demoralizing were fellow citizens who did not want to hear about how U.S. military aid and advisers, including corporations and private security firms, were committing human rights abuses, assassinations, and massacres throughout Latin America. Many Americans had internalized the values of hyper-patriotism and the feelings of fun, entertainment, and I-don't-want-to-know-what-my-government-is-doing.
Ed Haase, a dedicated radio-journalist, eventually decided to leave the United States. He was an investigative journalist working in a corporate-owned and virtual world. The goal was to make people feel good, so they would buy the next advertised product and war. Ed Haase was critical of the news media, for it had imprisoned people in a virtual cage of feel-good and entertaining news and information. Instead of listening to others experiences or traveling and searching for certainty, for many a media-oriented virtual experience became the ultimate reality. Independent thinking and objective beliefs based on real and global experiences were replaced with manufactured thinking and contrived beliefs.
The magnetism of U.S. censorship is that people "think" they are free and knowledgeable, but they do not "know" they have internalized and have been imprisoned by a national-security-virtual-state. It purports fear, ignorance, confusion, misinformation and is highly selective in regards to the past and present. It induces false values and incorrect thoughts, which are far removed from the realities of the rest of the world. Wikileaks is to be commended for shattering a de-contextualized and virtual world, along with confronting those in the political, military, academic, and intelligence establishments. Already, at least one member has been detained and questioned and there have been numerous threats.
Wikileaks has also gained the attention of U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who condemned the group by claiming the military footage that showed U.S. forces killing civilians were out of context and provided an incomplete picture. They are also under surveillance and have probably been infiltrated. As they try to expose a secretive and clandestine government and its misguided military operations, let us hope U.S. citizens will be able to listen, observe and understand the realities and sufferings of others, especially in nations that are still being occupied by the United States.

Mars Experiment Design Competition Focuses on Teamwork:

Before Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon, NASA wanted to learn more about Earth's closest celestial body. So, it sent probes and rovers to check out the conditions. The space agency has sent similar missions to the Red Planet, only now it is turning to future explorers to help learn how to live and work on Mars long before humans travel there.

Space Florida recently announced the names of three winning school teams in Florida for the Mars Experiment Design Competition, which will bring the nation one step closer to the Martian surface.

Lake Nona Middle/High School in Orange County: Team "Geeky Lions" will perform geology and biology field studies with its experiment called "Can Water Plus Martian Soil Equal Life?"

Mulrennan Middle School in Hillsborough County: Team "TechPlayZone Red Voyagers" will study human factors with its experiment called "Emotional Dynamics."

Golden Gate High School in Collier County: Team "Big Red Mission Crew" will study mission operations with its experiment called "How to Produce Energy."

Space Florida received 32 completed entries in this scientific design competition, which invited Florida middle and high school students to design scientific experiments to send to the Mars Desert Research Station, or MDRS, in Utah in March.

The MDRS is one of four such facilities throughout the world, and is operated by The Mars Society. Each facility can simulate the environmental and geological conditions encountered on the planet.

Three judges -- all recognized experts in their field of study -- closely examined the entries and agreed that scientific standards were very high.

"We are grateful to everyone who participated. It is obvious that teachers and students worked very closely together so as to come up with these innovative Mars experiments," said Tony Gannon, Space Florida director of education.

The winning teams will now focus on refining their experiments before they are shipped to the facility.

In the spring, and with cooperation from Kennedy and its Digital Learning Network, or DLN, NASA personnel will transmit scientific results obtained from the experiments to the three winning teams. During these transmissions, each team will have an opportunity to interact directly with NASA engineers. They also will take a virtual tour of Kennedy.

Dr. George Yoakum, science teacher and "Geeky Lions" team leader at Lake Nona Middle/High School said, "Perhaps most importantly, students learned to recognize the strengths of their teammates, peers and mentors, and became comfortable organizing these resources to reach high-quality decisions."

American owners to sell Liverpool

American owners to sell Liverpool :

(CNN) -- George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks, the American billionaire owners of English Premier League side Liverpool, have announced their intention to sell the club in a statement on the team's official Web site.
The duo, who bought the club for $338 million in 2007, confirmed that Barclays Capital will advise on the sale process after "numerous expressions of interest from third parties."
Liverpool also announced the boss of British Airways, Martin Broughton, has been appointed as chairman to oversee the sale.
Hicks and Gillett's statement read: "Owning Liverpool ... over these past three years has been a rewarding and exciting experience for us and our families.
Are English soccer clubs worth the investment?
"Having grown the club this far we have now decided together to look to sell the club to owners committed to take the club through its next level of growth and development."
Should Stan Kroenke buy Arsenal?
In June 2009, the public accounts of Kop Football (Holdings) Limited -- the company which owns Liverpool and is headed by Gillett and Hicks -- revealed that under the tenure of the Americans the net debt of the club had reached $462 million.
The financial report also showed that $54 million of interest payments had been required to service this debt during the financial year that ended in July 2008.

Despite this, Gillett and Hicks added there had been a "significant improvement in the financial performance of the club" during their time in charge.

The pair stated that revenues had increased by 55 percent since 2007, while operating profits (before player trading and exceptions) were up by 60 percent.

The statement added the side, who are one of the most successful and widely supported clubs in world football, will continue to progress the "well-advanced plans" for a new, state-of-the-art stadium near to their current home of Anfield.

Former player and soccer commentator Mark Lawrenson, who won the European Cup with Liverpool in 1984, told CNN the news would be welcomed by many associated with the club.

"They have done nothing for [Liverpool] -- the day the club was sold to the Americans was one of the worst in the club's history.

"[The] news of the sale means it's a great day ... but it's a long, long [path] to get the club back to the position they used to be in."

Lawrenson added there were key priorities for whoever may come in to buy the side: "We want someone who will get the club at the right price and build the new stadium -- they need to bring in new players as well. As long as they come in and deliver on their promises unlike the Americans."

James McKenna, head of Liverpool supporters' group "Spirit of Shankly" told CNN: "It's been an unbelievable situation with boardroom struggles being played out in the public.

"The news [Gillett and Hicks] are looking to sell the club is something all fans will welcome."

Five Things to Know About New York’s New Housewife

There’s a new Housewife in town! As she joins the cast of The Real Housewives of New York City, Sonja Morgan spoke to PEOPLE about her decision to step into the reality-TV spotlight, early connections with her costars and her beauty secrets (Botox and yucky green juice!). –Charlotte Triggs
1. She doesn’t primp for her shoots: “I never looked at myself on camera when we were shooting,” says Morgan, 46. “I didn’t want to be self conscious. The other women get blowouts and full makeup just to sit around at their apartment while filming. I did my makeup on camera. I wasn’t afraid of that, but I did avoid watching the footage [because] I’d just be paralyzed.”
2. She and Ramona Singer go way back: “Ramona and I knew each other when we were single — working out together on 61st Street — when we bought our first apartments, first fur coats (back then it wasn’t so bad). Then we both got married and had children,” says Morgan. Since then, “I haven’t seen her that much. I don’t see her on my scene in Gstaad, or in St. Tropez.”
3. She originally turned down the show: “The show had reached out to me, but I was too chicken. I was freshly divorced [from JP Morgan heir John Morgan, with whom she has a 9-year-old daughter.]” Later, when she saw the show and the women on it, she was a tad jealous. “I saw how well the girls were doing and they were blossoming. LuAnn and Ramona were totally renewed. I even saw Alex metamorphosing. They’re having fun, writing books, making appearances. I wanted to do that.”
4. Her friends think she’s crazy for doing reality TV: “My social set is like, ‘Why would you ever do this?’” Morgan laughs. “My answer is very simple: I have a house to support my daughter in and I’m on my own. I was worried about what people would think because I always put my foot in my mouth.”
5. She’s all about getting work done: Botox? Juvederm? “Oh God yes, I do it all!” says Morgan. “But I think it’s all about moderation … I will drink wine and eat great food when I want, but I still drink my green juice every morning even though it doesn’t taste good!” –Charlotte Triggs

I travel and work and that's my job, and I’m very grateful and fortunate to have a job. When work comes my way I only do it so I can literally put food on the table and send my kids to school.”

But what about her ex-husband, Jon? What does he do for a living? Gosselin’s response: a confused look followed by “Ummm…I don’t know.”

Leno pushed a little harder - does Jon have a job? “Not that I’m aware of,” she said.

But he is around to take care of the kids when Gosselin is away. Right now, Gosselin spends three days a week in Los Angeles for her "Dancing With The Stars" job while the kids stay home in Pennsylvania. “The beauty of my job, it’s very varied. I’m an author, I’m a TV person, I’m a dancer, [DWTS fans: she did say this with uncertainty] so a lot of it I can build around my schedule,” she told Leno. “A lot of the time Jon will be there with the kids or some of the time taking care of the kids while I’m gone.”

However she may feel about her ex-husband, Gosselin doesn’t reveal it in her book, “I Just Want You to Know: Letters to My Kids on Love, Life and Family.”

“One of the things I like about your book is that you’re reasonably fair and quite kind to your husband because he’s still the dad and the kids will read it,” Leno said.

“I won’t ever write anything nasty because the book to me is like a print interview. I don’t want my kids to be able to get a hold of that and [read] bad things,” Gosselin said. “I came up with the title because I say all the time; I’m a traveling, working mom that brings a certain amount of guilt. I always say, I just want my kids to know that I love them.”
